Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel Abdo (Albert) El Tassi was born and raised in Kherbetrouha, Lebanon. He took his education at the Al-Azhar University of Egypt, graduating in 1966. He returned to Lebanon where he was employed as a schoolteacher and principal. He emigrated to Canada in October 1969 and shortly after his arrival began working in the shipping department of Peerless Garments Ltd.
In May 1975, Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi became a proud Canadian citizen. In 1986, he took over complete management of Peerless Garments and in June of 2006, was named President and CEO. Since that time, Colonel El Tassi has guided the company from sales of $3,000,000.00 annually to over $45,000,000.00 in sales annually.
A well known businessman and philanthropist, Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi works tirelessly to promote understanding, tolerance and respect across the globe. He has donated millions of dollars to various Canadian charities such as UNICEF, the Sick Kids Foundation, SOS Children’s Villages Canada, the Manitoba Islamic Association, many schools throughout Winnipeg, the Canadian Red Cross, Human Concern International, the Canadian Diabetes Association, World Vision, United Way, the Canadian Human Rights Museum and many others.
Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi has been a generous supporter of a number of military charities. When General Hillier asked for his help in starting up The Military Family Fund he, without hesitation, became the largest start-up contributor in Canada and continues to contribute annually. The Military Family Resource Centre “Pillows for Troops”, “Operation Santa”, and the”Airport Lounge” are also recipients of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi’s philanthropy.
As President and CEO of Peerless Garments, Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi’s dealings with DND have earned him praise and several awards one of which reads “In appreciation of the Expertise, Professionalism and Enthusiasm of the Clothe the Soldier, Improved Environmental Clothing System Project – On Spec – Ahead of Time – On Budget”.
Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi is a member of many boards and committees including the Manitoba and Winnipeg Chambers of Commerce, the Canadian Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, and the Canadian Forces Liaison Council. He is an active participant with “The Arthur V. Mauro Centre for Peace and Justice”.
Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi is married to Samira and they have four children, Marriam, Omyia, Aiche, and Mohammed. He is a member of the Order of Canada, and the Order of Manitoba. He is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel El Tassi is proud and and honoured to have had the privilege of making Winnipeg home for himself, his wife, children and grandchildren.
